Description
This version of the Lochgelly Tawse was made by my father from the early 1970’s as an alternative to the Extra Heavy school belt. (see history pages for more information) It was very thick anywhere between 10 and 16mm and brutally firm, it doesn’t fold or roll. Dad didn’t consider it a suitable replacement and only made a few but I’m occasionally asked to replicate it, so here’s my version.
It comes in anywhere between 10 and 16mm thick and is finished both sides with hand stitching reinforcing the tips of the tails, handle and middle section, (I haven’t been asked to make a 3 tail yet but there’s no reason why not), it has no weight stamp and the maker’s stamps or Logos are ‘JOHN. J. DICK MAKER LOCHGELLY’ and ‘MARGARET DICK MAKER LOCHGELLY’ on the reverse.
It was traditionally burnished with wax to a dark tan colour but I’m offering the option of dark brown too, the dark brown wax highlights the natural grain of the hide producing an aged patina.
These belts are made from two solid piece of Buffalo Hide with a finished surface on both sides, it is very thick and firm not suitable for folding or rolling.
This leather is veg tanned and heavily wax burnished it will not require a lot of care but please avoid exposure to bright sunlight or heat, a wee polish up occasionally with a wax polish is all that’s required.
Belt in photograph is 12-13mm thick and traditional dark tan.
